When Sample-First Wins
For products that buyers want to test before committing to a full purchase. Perfume, coffee, skincare, supplements. For AOV above 50 euros, sample-first is almost always effective. Removing the trial barrier means more buyers commit to the sample.

A perfume brand introduced sample-first and achieved a 38% sample-to-full-purchase rate. AOV rose from 56 euros to 174 euros. Without the sample funnel, PDP bounce was 78%; with it, bounce dropped to 48%.
When Sample-First Does Not Work
For impulse purchases (no trial needed). For low AOV products (sample cost eats into margin). For products without a meaningful taste or efficacy difference (buyers do not need to try them). Sample-first is industry-specific, not universal.
