What Privacy Sandbox Is
Chrome's Privacy Sandbox is the answer to third-party cookies. The Topics API replaces interest targeting (aggregated, not user-level). The Attribution Reporting API replaces click tracking (delayed and aggregated). As of 2026, both are in beta, with 2027 set as the default.
How to Prepare
- Build a first-party data pipeline (email and user accounts)
- Establish server-side tracking as your foundation
- Activate test mode for the Privacy Sandbox APIs
- Develop a user-match data strategy (prioritize email capture)
- Set up cohort reporting to prepare for aggregated data
Brands that built a first-party pipeline in 2025 have a preparation advantage in 2026. Brands starting in 2026 still have 12 months. By 2027, Privacy Sandbox will be the default; without preparation, expect performance pressure.
What Will Stop Working
Purely third-party cookie-based lookalike audiences. User-level tracking without match data. Standard pixels without server-side. Brands still running on the old stack in 2026 will face a hard stop in 2027.
„Privacy Sandbox is not a crisis. It is a migration. A 12-month head start is everything.”
